Treason of the Blackest Dye Exhibition

Revolutionary Westchester 250 is thrilled to bring to you a very special free exhibit that highlights one of the most remarkable chapters in the Revolutionary War—one that played out right here in Westchester County. Intrigue, betrayal, and chance circumstances will come to life for visitors to Treason of the Blackest Dye, the True Story of Arnold, André, and the Three Honest Militiamen. If the events that unfolded here in 1780 had turned out differently, America’s war for Independence may well have been lost!

The exhibit opened on September 25 to a sell-out crowd at The Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Curated and produced by Revolutionary Westchester 250, the exhibit runs through December 11 and uses documents, artifacts and illustrated panels to tell the story of 1780 capture of British spy Major John André and exposure of Benedict Arnold’s treason. Some of the original documents present on opening day have been replaced by exact facsimiles including the papers found in André's boot when he was captured in Tarrytown on September 23 1780 (from the New York State Archives), Isaac Van Wart’s Fidelity Medal (from the New York State Museum) and Nathanael Greene’s Orderly Book proclaiming “Treason of the Blackest Dye” (from the U.S. Military Academy). Other original artifacts as well as costumes and photographs from the popular AMC television series Turn: Washington’s Spies are also on display.
